Clockwork Applause elevates the mundane act of clapping into a poetic mechanical ritual. Enclosed within a glass dome, a pair of metallic hands waits in silence, disconnected from human emotion until the interactor intervenes. This physical barrier transforms the applause—a gesture typically used for public celebration—into an isolated, automated performance that questions the authenticity of social etiquette in a highly structured world.
By rotating the clockwork key, the operator fuels a rhythmic collision. The mechanical “clap” vibrates with a metallic coldness, echoing the fatigue of repetitive labor often found in Chiu’s work. This movement is no longer a spontaneous outburst of joy, but a programmed response. It forces the participant to confront the absurdity of “forced” appreciation and the delicate tension between human warmth and industrial precision.
